James E. Johnson Medal of Honor Unveiling at Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building

On Saturday, November 2, 2024, the Pocatello community will gather to honor one of its own, Sgt. James E. Johnson, during the official Medal of Honor unveiling at the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building. Sgt. Johnson was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration, for his bravery during the Korean War. This medal will be on permanent display at the memorial building, commemorating his sacrifice and serving as a symbol of courage for generations to come.

Join Stephanie McKay Johnson, Sgt. Johnson’s daughter, for this heartfelt ceremony as she presents her father’s Medal of Honor in the place where his legacy began.

Sgt. James E. Johnson: A Legacy of Heroism

Born in Pocatello on January 1, 1926, Sgt. James E. Johnson became a true American hero through his extraordinary actions during the Korean War. He fought bravely in the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, a significant and challenging battle, where he ultimately gave his life in the line of duty. Sgt. Johnson was declared missing in action and presumed killed on December 2, 1950, at the young age of 24. For his acts of valor, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1954.

This unveiling ceremony is not only a tribute to Sgt. Johnson but also an opportunity for the community to come together and honor all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

On Friday, November 1, 2024, the Pocatello community has a unique opportunity to honor one of its own, as we welcome Stephanie McKay Johnson, daughter of Sgt. James E. Johnson, Medal of Honor recipient. Sgt. Johnson, born and raised in Pocatello, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his incredible bravery during the Korean War.

Please join us for this patriotic welcome at the Pocatello Regional Airport at 4:30 p.m. as Stephanie returns to her father’s hometown to honor his legacy.

Who Was Sgt. James E. Johnson?

Sgt. James E. Johnson was a Pocatello native who displayed extraordinary courage during the Korean War, particularly at the Chosin Reservoir in December 1950, where he was declared missing in action and presumed killed.
