Honoring Presidents’ Day: Historical Support for Veterans

Honoring Presidents’ Day: Historical Support for Veterans

Presidents’ Day is a special time to honor all the leaders of our country. But it’s also a perfect moment to remember and support the brave men and women who have served in the military. Throughout history, U.S. Presidents have played a big role in helping veterans.

Presidential Support for Veterans

From the early days of our nation, Presidents have shown support for those who served. For example, President Abraham Lincoln made sure veterans were cared for after the Civil War. He believed that taking care of soldiers was a way to honor their sacrifice.

Creating Laws and Programs

Many Presidents have created laws and programs to help veterans. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Veterans Administration to provide services and benefits. More recently, President George W. Bush signed the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act, giving education benefits to those who served after September 11.

Presidents’ Day and Veteran Recognition

Presidents’ Day is not just a day off from work or school. It’s a time to remember the leaders who have guided our nation and the veterans who have protected it. Local communities often hold events to honor veterans, showing respect and gratitude for their service.

Supporting Veterans Today

Even today, Presidents continue to support veterans. They work to improve healthcare, education, and job opportunities for those who have served. The Disabled American Veterans of Idaho is one organization that works alongside the government to ensure veterans receive the support they need.

How You Can Help

Everyone can play a part in honoring veterans. Whether it’s thanking a veteran personally, volunteering with organizations like Disabled American Veterans, or participating in local events on Presidents’ Day, every little bit helps. Let’s use Presidents’ Day to show our appreciation for the heroes who have served our country.

On this Presidents’ Day, let’s remember the strong bond between our nation’s leaders and the veterans they support. Together, we can ensure that those who have served are honored and taken care of, today and every day.

Since October 15, 2013, Newby-Ginnings of North Idaho, Inc. has been a lifeline for Veterans, Active Service Members, and Gold Star families. What started in a small dining room has grown into a support center helping over 6,500 military families with food, clothing, and essential supplies.

Every day, 175 to 200 people visit Newby-Ginnings, not just for help, but for dignity and hope.

But now, we need your help. The demand for support keeps growing, and our current building is too small. That’s why we’re launching a Capital Campaign to buy a larger facility—so we can continue serving those who served us.

Why We Need a Bigger Space

🏠 We’re Running Out of Room – The current space, in use since 2016, is too small for the growing number of Veterans and families who need help.

📦 More Storage Needed – A bigger facility will help organize donations better, so we never have to turn away supplies due to lack of space.

🤝 A New Veteran Community Center – With more room, we plan to offer more services, bringing in community partners to support Veterans and their families in even more ways.

Newby-Ginnings is committed to helping—but we can’t do it alone.

Ways You Can Help

💰 Donate – Every tax-deductible dollar helps us get closer to a larger, better facility for Veterans.

How Service Dogs Help Veterans Heal

How Service Dogs Help Veterans Heal

Many veterans face challenges after returning from service. These challenges can include physical injuries, emotional stress, and mental health issues like PTSD. Service dogs have become an important part of helping veterans heal and lead better lives. In this post, we will explore how these hardworking dogs make a difference.

Emotional Support and Companionship

One of the biggest benefits of having a service dog is the emotional support they provide. Veterans often feel lonely or anxious, and a service dog can be a constant companion. The presence of a dog can help reduce feelings of isolation and provide comfort during tough times.

Assistance with Daily Tasks

Service dogs are trained to help with various daily activities. For veterans with physical injuries, these dogs can fetch items, open doors, or help with mobility. This assistance allows veterans to regain independence and perform tasks they might struggle with on their own.

Reducing Stress and Anxiety

Interactions with dogs have been shown to lower stress levels. Petting a service dog can release calming chemicals in the brain, helping to reduce anxiety and improve overall mood. This is especially helpful for veterans dealing with PTSD or other stress-related conditions.

Encouraging Physical Activity

Having a service dog encourages veterans to stay active. Walking the dog or playing outside provides regular exercise, which is important for both physical and mental health. Staying active can help veterans maintain a healthier lifestyle and improve their well-being.

Building a Sense of Routine

Service dogs help veterans establish a daily routine. Feeding, grooming, and walking the dog creates a structured environment. Having a routine can provide stability and a sense of purpose, which are important for mental health.

Enhancing Social Interactions

Service dogs can also help veterans connect with others. Walking a dog often leads to conversations with neighbors or strangers, reducing social anxiety and building new relationships. This increased social interaction can improve a veteran’s quality of life.

Improving Overall Well-Being

Overall, service dogs play a crucial role in the healing process for veterans. They provide emotional support, assistance with daily tasks, and encourage a healthier lifestyle. These dogs help veterans feel more confident and capable, making it easier to overcome the challenges they face.

Conclusion

Service dogs are more than just pets; they are vital partners in the healing journey of many veterans. By offering support, companionship, and assistance, these dogs help veterans navigate life after service with greater ease and happiness. If you are a veteran in need of support, consider reaching out to organizations that provide trained service dogs to see how they can help you heal.
